Monday 3/15's "Monday in March" Meeting Will Start One Hour Late

This week's "Mondays in March" gathering with Lara Wilson will run from 10AM-11AM, not the usual start time of 9AM. The topic this week is "No Excuses". Have no clue what "Mondays in March" are all about? They're a free way for members and friends of members to connect, have coffee and snacks, and talk about writing. Each meeting includes a short period of conversation about a specific topic as well as time to mingle. March 15th's topic will be “No Excuses" and will address the questions: What keeps you from getting work done? Do you truly need more time, or better discipline? The group will examine what derails writers and offer pragmatic suggestions to help us make the best of our writing time.

Muse 2010 Sessions Selling Out

In its first two weeks of registration, Grub Street's 9th Annual Muse and the Marketplace--conference has signed up 300 participants, and a few of the craft sessions have already sold out. Don't worry, though, there are plenty of excellent options available. The weekend of May 1-2, 2010 at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel promises to be a great one, as Grub welcomes keynote speaker Chuck Palahniuk, one of the most popular and compelling writers at work today, and over 85 guest authors, literary agents, editors and industry professionals. For two full days, our distinguished line-up will be leading sessions on the craft and marketing of fiction and non-fiction. And if you're interested in this year's Manuscript Mart, where you'll have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with an agent or editor who's read a sample of your work, check out all the details here, but act fast because many of the agents and editors have already sold out. This thoughtfully curated conference features numerous craft and publishing sessions as well as breakfast, lunch and opportunities for meeting, greeting and networking with fellow writers and industry professionals from Boston and beyond. In the lead-up to the conference, follow us on Twitter, using #muse10. See you in May!

New Manuscript Mart Agents and Editors Added

Due to the high demand for the Manuscript Mart at the Muse and the Marketplaceconference, we have added 3 new literary agents and 3 new editors from publishing houses. The agents are Jill Kneerim, Katherine Fausset and Katharine Sands. The editors are Amy Caldwell and Alexis Rizzuto (both from Beacon Press) and Tim Bartlett (Random House). The new editors focus exclusively on non-fiction; the new agents cover a wide range of fiction and non-fiction. Each of them will read 20 pages of your work ahead of time and meet with you for twenty minutes at the conference.

2010 Fiction Book Prize Winner Announced

Vestal McIntyre has won the 2010 Grub Street National Book Prize in Fiction for his novel, Lake Overturn, published in 2009 by Harper. McIntyre is the also the author of You Are Not the One: Stories (Carroll & Graf, 2004), was a guest author at last year’s Muse and the Marketplace conference, and will return to the conference this spring. Of Lake Overturn, Grub instructor and head juror Lisa Borders wrote: "McIntyre’s magnificent novel explores the social strata of a small town in Idaho in the 1980s. The prose is lush, the observations keen, and the plot engrossing to the last page; but what sets this book apart is McIntyre’s utter sympathy for all of his characters. From Connie, the fundamentalist whose reading of the Bible is too literal even for her own church, to Wanda, the addict who yearns to be a mother, to Enrique, a junior high school misfit who can occasionally be as cruel as his tormentors in his struggle for acceptance, the reader cannot help but be moved by the ways in which the good people of Eula, Idaho stumble, rise and grow." We also congratulate our Finalist, Scott Blackwood, for his excellent novel We Agreed To Meet Just Here (Western Michigan University Press, 2009).
