Intern at Grub Street

Internships generally run each semester (Fall, Spring, and Summer) and average 12-15 hours/week during office hours (Monday -- Friday, 10am-6pm). Schedules are casual, as is dress code and office atmosphere. We have a lot of fun at work and get a LOT done; we expect the same from you. In exchange for your hard work, you'll get an insider's look at the Boston creative writing scene, free Grub Street classes, and some valuable skills to put on your resumé. We've also been known to write some killer recommendations for those who are worthy. This is a great opportunity for students, recent grads, and anyone interested in nonprofit work and the arts.

Application deadline for Fall interns is August 20th. To apply, please submit a cover letter and résumé to chip@grubstreet.org.

Renaissance Intern (Summer 2010 internship filled. Check back for Fall 2010.)

Like a renaissance man (or woman), the renaissance intern will dabble in (and excel at) a variety of tasks at Grub Street. Duties include:

  • Office administration, such as filing, assisting with mailings, keeping the space organized, doing research on a variety of topics, and whatever else strikes our fancy.
  • Graphic design, PR and marketing projects, depending on skill set.
  • Internet research.
  • Writing projects, including articles for our Free Press newspaper.
  • Managing the card catalogue system for our member library.
  • Grunt work, such as assembling furniture, restocking supplies, helping us tidy up the office, setting up for events and classes.
  • Arts and crafts projects.
  • Necessary skills for the renaissance intern: ENTHUSIASM, willingness to work on a variety of projects, ability to work independently and with minimal direction, superb attention to detail, stellar organizational skills, ability to learn new tasks quickly, pride in a job well done, and a sense of humor.

Events Intern (Summer 2010 internship filled. Check back for Fall 2010.)

The events intern typically doesn’t work during office hours. Instead, they are available after hours and on weekends to assist with our workshops, events, parties and seminars.  Typical duties include registering students, assisting instructors, locking up before and after events, helping coordinate parties, setting up the rooms for events, handling payments, and more. A great way to be a “face” of Grub Street!

Fund-raising and Development Intern (seeking one for Fall 2010)

The fund-raising and development intern will assist the Development Director with a variety of tasks, including grants research and proposal writing, assisting with direct mail projects, managing the production of acknowledgment letters, managing membership services, and helping with our annual fundraiser. Necessary skills: experience writing grant proposals, excellent writing and communication skills, ability to work with minimal direction and an enthusiasm for fund-raising and the literary arts.

YAWP Intern (Spring 2010 internship filled. Check back for Fall 2010.)

The Young Adult Writers Program (YAWP) intern assists in our free YAWP program for teenage writers. Responsibilities include tracking student information, helping shape the program along with its teachers and coordinator, and attending the YAWP sessions themselves. Necessary skills: experience with and enthusiasm for teenagers and the arts, excellent organizational skills, availability on occasional Saturdays.
